After a period of sub zero temperatures and heavy snowfall, the sun came out and the snow started to melt. The pictures below give a flavour of just how deep the snow was.

Bulgaria is suffering a very harsh winter with temperatures of -20ºC. Heavy snow and torrential rains have cut off electricity, stranded people, cars, buses and lorries. Geshaview is under a thick blanket of snow. This gallery of pictures was taken on the 7 February 2012.

Geshaview at the end of 2011

The past year saw the landscaping at Geshaview continuing with the construction of the bridge and pond as well as the stone walling and paths for access to the View Cafe. The roads and pathways around the village were also completed. Work on the Courtyard continued with the cobble stone flooring being laid and the balconies and balustrading installed. The interiors of the shops were also prepared for use.
We take a brief tour of the village to see how it has matured during 2011.

We would welcome you to Geshaview in Bulgaria during 2012 so you can experience the natural surroundings that we have preserved and created.

Recreation area at Geshaview

When we built Geshaview our main concern was to preserve the trees and natural landscaping. One thing that we required though was a flat, level recreation/playing area where outdoor events could be held.
David Hollands talks about the amount of earth moving that is required to create a flat area and also shows how some of the rocks and boulders that were unearthed during the building process are being incorporated into the Geshaview landscape.

First frost of winter at Geshaview

The freak snowstorm that occurred in October was a reminder of how unpredictable the weather can be. One thing for sure though is that the first really heavy frost of the year means that winter is definitely on its way!

The pictures were taken on the 21 November by Stefan, who braved the sub zero temperature to capture the beauty of nature.

Organic fruit farm in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has an abundance of fruits, including apples, peaches, watermelon and plums and more exotic fruit like quinces, figs and others.
In September, David Hollands and family visited an organic fruit at Dryanovo near to the Geshaview village and tasted the apples and plums grown there.

The organic fruit farm was founded by Inex Agro Ltd in 2006, and farms on 400,000 square metres of farm land. To find out more visit their website: www.inexagro.net.

Severe weather causes damage to the trees at Geshaview

On the 17th October 2011, Bulgaria experienced severe weather conditions. Heavy snowfall and hurricane force winds caused major disruption to traffic with many mountain passes blocked, trapping cars, lorries and heavy vehicles. Widespread power cuts were reported in Eastern and Northern Bulgaria.

Unfortunately, Geshaview did not escape the snow and strong winds.

There was major damage to some of the trees, but luckily all of the houses remained unscathed. The road leading to the village was blocked by fallen trees and the power failure lasted for 15 hours.

In the video above, David Hollands shows some of the damage and explains how the natural drainage system is coping with the thawing snow.

Archaeological dig near Geshaview - part one

Bulgaria is known as the crossing point of Europe and Asia with Greece, Turkey and the Mediterranean coast only 200 miles from the capital Sofia. Steeped in history, connected to ancient civilisations, the Roman and Byzantine empires, today, Bulgaria is left holding priceless art and architecture preserved throughout the centuries.

David Hollands travelled to a location close to Geshaview to meet a group of archaeologists from the New Bulgarian University, Sofia, as they dug for roman remains.

In part two, David discovers more about the dig, gets to hold a freshly unearthed coin from the 4th century and discusses what the archaeologists hope to find and the future of the dig.

Bozhentsi village in Bulgaria

Bozhentsi village and architectural reserve in central Bulgaria is noted for its well-preserved National Revival architecture and history. (Also known as: Bozhenci, Bojenci, Bojenzi, Boženci, Bojentsi, Bojentzi).

Brazilian President visits Bulgaria

The President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, visited her father's birthplace of Gabrovo whilst she was on her official tour of Bulgaria.

Her cavalcade then drove close to Geshaview as she passed through Dryanovo on her way to Veliko Tarnovo. David Hollands was on hand to witness the event and count the cars.

Creating the stone wall effect on the houses

Finding the shade at Geshaview

In this short video David Hollands talks about why it was important to preserve the natural landscape and the trees at Geshaview.

With the concept now reaching its conclusion, the trees at Geshaview give a natural shade which is so different from the most ergonomic, sophisticated umbrella you can buy these days.

With only 22 trees removed from the ground, the natural shade and a cool breeze from the mountains 'lightens the hot summer days'...

Gone fishing... at Geshaview

Only 15 minutes drive through the lanes from the Geshaview village in Bulgaria there is a great little lake, ideal for holiday fishing.
David Hollands and his daughter spent a hot summer's day there.

From tiddlers to 20lb carp, safe and with all the facilities - WC's, cafe and, if overnight fishing is on the menu, then special arrangements can be made.
Pay about 3 lev for your rod and you can fish for as long as you want.
If you catch some of the bigger fish you can pay a small amount and take it home for supper. The tiddlers are for free and very tasty I may add.
A day here at the lake can be a great experience for those who have never discovered the joy of fishing and also good sport for the experienced angler.
Meanwhile back at Geshaview, the rest of the family are enjoying all the other facilities waiting for you to tell the story of the one that got away!

A rare visitor to Geshaview

A rare Humming-bird hawk-moth was spotted by David Hollands
at the Geshaview village in Bulgaria.
This large fast-flying moth (Latin name: Macroglossum stellatarum) can be seen hovering like a humming-bird over a variety of garden flowers while drinking the nectar.
The striking humming-bird hawk-moth is a native of North Africa and uses a long feeding tube for sucking nectar out of the flowers.
They have a wingspan of around two inches and their wings beat so fast an audible hum can clearly be heard.

David made this recording on the 30 August 2011 and has registered this sighting on the www.butterfly-conservation.org website as the first sighting of a Humming-bird hawk-moth to be made in Bulgaria.

The underlying principle behind the Geshaview village has been an eco-friendly approach to its construction.
One example of this is the roads and pathways that meander around the village.
No tarmac or concrete, no kerbs, drains or gutters, no cars!

The materials used for the roads are from the nearby quarry and the construction takes into account the natural drainage of surface water.

Bridge over the pond at Geshaview

Part of the landscaping at Geshaview has been the pond and traditional style bridge.
The pond is not only an attractive feature it also plays an important role in the village
water catchment system.

The bridge creates an idyllic location that is set to be the backdrop of a million photographs.
Built with reclaimed beams and designed in the traditional Bulgarian style, the bridge connects the main village to the forest townhouses and the forest edge.
As the pond matures during the autumn and winter, it will be stocked with fish, and, plants that are naturally found in the area will be slowly introduced.

The Belgium Ambassador, Marc Micheilsen, visited Geshaview on the
13 May 2011 as a guest of the Mayor of Dryanovo, Dr Ivan Nikolov.

The Belgium Ambassador, Marc Micheilsen (third from left), and guests, were given a
tour of Geshaview by David, Julian and Dessi.

The visit was spent understanding the sustainable aspects of the village, its future in the world of education, culture and forgotten values. Functioning as a destination for a wide range of activities Geshaview is being found by an increasing number of people who can understand the forward vision of the project and its community.

The First Geshaview International Arts Festival has now begun with the arrival of the artists and sculptors. The 16 page brochure for the Arts Festival produced by Geshaview, in association with Gallery Panev, is now available to read. The brochure contains introductions to each of the participating artists and sculptors with samples of their work, as well as information about Gallery Panev and Geshaview. There is also a Festival Event Calendar with details of the programme for the Festival.

Shefqet was born in Davidovc - Kosovo. Currently living and working in Holland, after graduating from the Fine Art Academy in Prishtina, Kosovo. He has worked as a lecturer but was always occupied by his painting and sculpture, Shefqet now works as a professional artist.

2nd Geshaview Orienteering Cup

The 2nd competition for the Geshaview Orienteering Cup (organised by the ‘bacho Kiro-94’ Orienteering Club, Dryanovo, Bulgaria) took place on Sunday 27th March.
This Central Bulgaria Orienteering Competition saw over 350 visitors and 240 competitors from 7 clubs with all 3 generations participating, as well as international athlete - Kirol Nikolov - ranked 6th in Europe.

Competitors of all ages get ready for the start.

The next International Orienteering Festival competition has been booked for September 2012.
The competitors will include international, invited runners of world ranking.

2 more artists register for the First Geshaview International Arts Festival

Two more artists have confirmed their intention to attend the First Geshaview International Arts Festival from the 6th to 19th May 2011.
This brings the total of artists and sculptors registered so far to 18.

Countries represented are Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Croatia, Hungaria, Italy, Kuwait, Russia and Turkey.

PANCHO PANEV
Graduated from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia in 1966, emphasis on graphics, in the class of Prof. Evtin Tomov and Prof. Vesselin Staykov. In 1972 he joined the Bulgarian Painters Union. Since 1966 regularly takes part in collective exhibitions of graphics in Sofia and inside the country, in international exhibitions in Turkey, Egypt and France. He holds solo exhibitions in St. Peterburg, Bucarest and Budapest.

THURAYA AL-BAQSAMI
Nationality: Kuwaiti
Thuraya Al-Baqsami is member of the “Kuwaiti Formative Art Society” since 1969, the “Formative Arts Group” of the GCC countries and member of the “Very Special Arts Organization” in Washington, D.C. (USA).
She was awarded the “Golden Palm Leaf” of the GCC-Print-Biennial in Riad/Saudi Arabia in 1989, in Doha/Qatar in 1992 and she won the 1st Prize of the “National Museum Exhibition” in Kuwait in 1987 and 1992.

Ludmila was born in Cheliabinsk, Russia and from 1971 to 1975 she studied at the art college in Saint-Petersburg. From 1975 to 1983 she studied in the I. E. Repin's Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture, department of painting in Saint-Petersburg.
Many of her works are in private collections around the world.

Suzan was born in Prizren and she graduated from Belgrade University, Museology in Art History Department at the Faculty of Philosophy.
She did research and investigation for 1 year including Louvre Museum in Paris. She did research, investigation and specialization for 1 year at Galleria Nationale D’arte Moderna in Rome, Italy.

LENKA VODA BALENKOVA
Lenka was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Bratislava and the Akademia Sztuka Piekna, Warsaw. She has exhibited in Bratislava, Warsaw, Banská; Štiavnica, Bratislava, Malacky Liptovsky Mikulas, Dehli (India) and Toledo in Spain.

IVAN PARASKOV
Nationality: Bulgarian.
Completed higher education in sculpture in 1970 and he has participated in national and international exhibitions and forums.
He has realized over 10 solo exhibitions in Europe and 16 monumental works.
His works are owned by Chastity collections in Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Austria, Finland, South Korea, USA and the Fund of the National Gallery.

As you wander around the village you will see boulders that have been carefully preserved and lovingly positioned to add to the feeling of being embraced by nature.

The warm spring sunshine has melted the snow away and after 30+ days of winter skies we can feel that the grey days of winter are behind us.
Clear skies during the day lead to crisp nights and that means a great view of the stars. David looked up and saw this on Sunday night... just a reminder that we need to look beyond the obvious... it's all there waiting!

Pınar was born in Istanbul in 1981. She started her art career in the Painting Department of Istanbul High School of Fine Arts in 1996. Afterwards, she continued her education in the painting department of Fine Arts Faculty of Marmara University during 1999-2003. She then completed the Master of Arts on the basic Section of Painting Program at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul.

SELIN AKTAN
Selin is an artist, painter, sculptor, writer whose work can be found in public and private collections around the world.
She is an established artist from Istanbul.
Selin has exhibited work in her hometown of Istanbul and across the globe in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Paris, Vienna, Zurich, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Denmark and Egypt.

Zoltán Ludvig in his pictures goes back to the roots, the ultimate limits. He likes to stir up our collective consciousness by his paintings. He can present an original state of the living substance, the first moment, when life starts.

DÁNIEL LUDVIG
Dániel Ludvig graduated at Pécs in 1999 as a graphic designer. His work consists of highly textured mixed media canvases of simplified faces with focusing on the eyes and of animal shapes.

The UK may be enjoying warm Spring sunshine but at Geshaview there was a fresh fall of snow at the weekend which means that the restarting of the landscaping work is further delayed.

Alexandre Osipov
Alexandre Osipov paints fantastically beautiful pictures. They are consistent in composition, shape, colour and craft. He paints pictures without breaking, without stem displacement. He paints in the unbroken understanding of the artist for his own work.

Giuseppe Spitu
Giuseppe Spitu is known for his performances and his installations but also for his sculptures, working in various materials like plastic, resin, glass, or wood.
This particular piece was created last year and is on display at Geshaview.

Milena Mladenova
Milena studied at the National School of Plastic Arts and Design-akad. Dechko Uzunov-Kazanlak and at the University “St. St. Cyril and Methodius where she was a student of sculpture.

Following the success of the orienteering competition in October last year we are pleased to announce that Geshaview will be sponsoring the 2nd competition for the Geshaview Orienteering Cup (organised by the ‘bacho Kiro-94’ Orienteering Club, Dryanovo, Bulgaria) which will take place on Sunday 27th March 2011.

The route will be the surrounding area of the Geshaview village.

The winners at last year's competition receive their medals.

Awards:
Every competitor completing the course will receive a medal presented on successful completion and scrutinisation. In addition the top 3 in each category will be presented with certificates of achievement reflecting their position. Prize money will also be presented to the first 3 competitors in the two main men’s and woman’s categories.

The Geshaview village web site (and this blog) have been up-dated to reflect that we are now getting ready to position Geshaview for the future – as a holiday destination!

The first thing you will notice about the new web site is that the focus is no longer on selling property.
Of course, there are still houses and apartments for sale at Geshaview, but the future of the village is in it becoming a holiday destination.
This re-design is very much looking to the future. many of you will be aware that some of the proposed facilities are not available at the moment (this will be fully explained to anyone who enquires about a holiday at Geshaview) but we anticipate that throughout 2011 the village will begin to come alive with visitors.

Better late than never...

We know, publishing the September/October issue of the Geshaview newsletter in the middle of November is a bit late, but, when you read it you will realise that there are some very good reasons why.
Inside there are articles on David Hollands and his family's move to Geshaview in order to take the village from a building project to the living and breathing entitity envisaged all those years ago, as well as Stephen & Valery Coburn moving to the village to take up their new roles: Valery as the Spiritual Director and Stephen as the International Events Co-ordinator and Wellbeing Director.

The Bulgaria National Television Channel 1 visited Geshaview to shoot material about the village. The team, including a reporter and 2 cameramen, were interested with the concept and the story behind the creation of "...such a magnificent and splendid project on such a large scale".

The documentary also meets British people who have settled in Bulgaria and, although in Bulgarian, gives an insight into their lives.

Look! No tarmac!!

Work has started on putting the top surface onto the pathways around the village, and not an inch of tarmac in sight!
As the construction of this phase of the village nears completion we can start to put the finishing touches to the landscaping and pedestrian access.

In keeping with the 'car free and eco-friendly' policy of the village the paths are being made with natural materials that are compacted to produce a stable and even surface for walking on.

Bulgaria is the most attractive country in South Central Europe for investment

The study aims to measure the attractiveness of South Central Europe for Foreign Direct Investment.
The report shows Bulgaria as the top location to establish or develop activities, over the next 3 years.

Autumn colours of Geshaview

The carefully preserved trees around the Geshaview village in Bulgaria are producing a wonderful display of autumn golden browns and ochres.
The pictures, taken by Yana Dimitrova, show that as the village matures and the trees grow you really will be 'living embraced by nature'.

Although still under construction, the scaffolding around the Geshaview Courtyard is gradually being removed and it is revealing just how stunning it will look.

The stonemasons have done an amazing job of combining a traditional Bulgarian style building with modern construction techniques.

Although the picture shows only a small section of the Courtyard you can begin to get a feel of how impressive it will be when finished.

Landscaping at Geshaview

After 3 years of careful and deliberate protection of all of the ground, trees and fauna on the village site we have finally started to create the ‘outdoor decoration’ of the village.

The levelling of the top soil and the sowing of grass seeds (1,000kg and 7 different varieties) is giving the village a green carpet that blends the houses to their surroundings.

Geshaview is beginning to to look less like a building site and more like the tranquil, eco-friendly village envisaged from the start.

After many months we have been able connect the new sewerage system.
Located away from the village near to the forest area the new and innovative non-chemical underground sewerage plant has broken new ground in Bulgaria for the use of a truly organic system.
The compact, biological ‘live bacteria’ system has a capacity to process the sewerage from over 500 people.
Connected to the village system at the lowest topological point this gravity controlled biological, non-chemical system will process the waste, then, before it is dispersed, all the water can then be passed through an ultraviolet filtration system and then back into the natural river water system.
Maybe it is a bit unusual to be proud of the sewer from your house… but in this instance I believe we have good reason to be.

The roof of the Geshaview Courtyard in Bulgaria is now under construction and the structure begins to take shape.
The Courtyard will have a wide range of shops, restaurants, cafes, creche, cinema, bank, conferencing facilities as well as apartments.

The Courtyard will be the hub of life in the village supplying day-to-day provisions of organic, locally grown fruit and vegetables, pharmacy and a wine cellar for residents and guests as well as ladies and gents fashion and accessories, an art gallery and local crafts and souvenirs of Bulgaria.

Conference in Bulgaria discusses property market

Julian Georgiev, Manager of Simplibulgaria, (developers of Geshaview) recently attended a conference to discuss the effects that the global crisis is having on the Bulgarian property market.

The article reported that most speakers were confident that the real Bulgarian property market was starting to emerge.

Julian commented that "The industry was in need of 'hot spots', but 'hot spots' have short lives". He went on to say "...we now have to analyze all the downsides of the business and the reasons that caused the poor performance of the market".

Recently seeded in late September and we are already seeing growth of grass in many areas of the village.
Landscaping of phase 1 and 2 of the village is well underway and the spring promises a glorious splash of colour.
During the next 3 months (snow permitting) the landscaping will develop into phase 3 and 4 of the project and the roads, track and walkways will all start to appear.
